Here’s my first attempt at blogging. Notice that 2 weeks ago we went to see Lynyrd Skynyrd – and Rob wrote about that in his blog. He neglected to say that people swilling alcohol all over the place became funnier and sillier as the evening went on – one lady in the aisle – and the guy in front of me standing up the whole time and waving his arms and attempting to play air drums to everything he heard . I remember in my college days attending a concert in SLC somewhat like that – and the smell of sweet grass being burned was evident both times. Anyway, I dutifully (for my ears’ sake) put in my ear plugs and determined to make the most of the evening and have some fun. In particular, I was aware that since Jared paid for the tickets, I wanted him to know we appreciated it! Only at the end did I wait for the proper moment with Rob alone to do the V-8 commercial thing – smack my forehead and say “Wow, I could have gone to the Temple!”
Now for an “antithesis” experience: Wednesday morning I received a call from Glenda Howell (Ryan will remember her - she was also Jared’s 3rd or 4th grade teacher) – she is evangelical and asked me to do her a favor – to be interviewed by a lady taking a comparative religions course – and that morning!!! So I said fine – and the lady called and came right over. In the meantime, I grabbed the “Preach my Gospel” manual and did a lightning quick refresher – said a prayer – and opened the door. For the next hour and a half we had a wonderful discussion about what LDS people believe. She has a Ph.D. and was needing to interview people of religions she was not familiar with so when she returns from her missionary work in Romania, she will/teach in a dept. at a religiously oriented college in Pasadena (I’d have to look up the name) - So she asked away, and I answered my best – let her know we are indeed Christians, what our concept of the pre-existence is, God, Jesus, the Holy Ghost, prayer, our purpose for life, life after death, temples, etc. etc. I in essence bore my testimony to her. We could have gone on but I had a student coming. At the end, she gave me a big hug (I was surprised it was so vigorous and long) - She was very appreciative. And she said she felt better about Mitt Romney running for Pres. now that she understands some of our beliefs better. (I also referred her to the church website and gave her a Book of Mormon.) She asked what a typical day should be like for a good, active Mormon – you know – prayer, scripture reading, go about your day being a good Christian. Certainly did make me think – and do a personal review of my own use of my time – to make sure I wasn’t a hypocrit in what I told her. Now that’s it for my blog – my very first blog – I will press the enter button and see if it worked. My next adventure might include pictures – If I learn how, I can send update pics of my trip to Oregon – and even a piano student who came to her lesson in a Sherlock Holmes costume. “The End” of my Blog #1 Linda, Grandma B
